A System of Grading

A 14-session course taking you from theory to real-life application of grading across multiple sizes, building an understanding of sizing and ease

   Watch Promo

A System of Grading takes you from theory to real-life application in homework and projects. This course is suited to designers, pattern writers, and technical editors.

Inclusivity is the goal in sizing (and other things). Find out how to make the right decisions so that your work represents the sizes presented in their best possible way. A good fit is essential for true inclusivity!

In teaching I typically use examples from missy sizing, but the concepts are applicable to children, men’s, and plus- or other-sizes. I have taught a plus-size specific grading course. The sizing origin numbers are different, and the specifics may vary, but the application is the same.

I teach the course as if it were a college course, and homework is assigned, and should be completed to stay on track. There is an opportunity to submit all homework at the end of the course for review and issuance of a Certificate of Completion.

What to Expect

  • Course materials are released on Mondays and Wednesdays once we finish the initial live sessions.
  • For live sessions, the course materials release the day before the live session.
  • In the A System of Grading 14-session course I like to begin each live session with questions.
  • Each class begins at 10 am Pacific and runs for an hour (sometimes a little more). (Use this to figure out your time).
  • The first three sessions are live. After that, you will get videos of the material. On Fridays we will meet live so I can answer questions, expand, or clarify.
  • When I am live, you can see my computer screen, and my face. I record all live sessions and you will be given access following the live session.
  • The videos are only of my screen if they are course sessions.
  • Structure videos generally are me talking to the camera or demonstrating (so my hands, not my face). These give context, explain things you may not be familiar with.
  • Recorded sessions are excellent for logging questions. Write down where in the video (trust me I have no idea what I said!)
  • I will have a Slack Channel available for ongoing help and conversation.
  • Although I specifically speak to knitting, it is appropriate to crochet as well.

Jill Wolcott /Jill Wolcott Knits

I am trained as a fashion designer with a focus on garment construction and pattern making. I have focused on knitwear, which provides an opportunity to create both the fabric and shape, since 1993. I spend my days thinking, writing, researching, and designing all things knitwear -- from the perfect cast on to the best way to communicate what I have to share. I want to share what I have learned so you can have the knitting or designing life you want for yourself. I want you to feel the same passion and satisfaction and I endeavor to communicate it all with a sense of humor and fun.

I taught line development and portfolio development classes (among others!) at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising for 16 years, and was an award-winning faculty member. Fit, sizing, and proportion fill my view of garment design so I teach grading, fit and design. I cannot quit designing, so I have a line of knitting patterns and eBooks. I am co-author, and illustrator, of YNotKnit: Step-by-step instructions for Continental knitting and knitting basics. My website is filled with information you can use. www.jillwolcottknits.com
